Diet for Patients with End-stage Kidney Disease

Diet for Patients with End-stage Kidney Disease
Nutrition is a very important part for patients at end stage of kidney disease. There is a proverb in China that treatment accounts for 30%, while nutrition and diet accounts for 70% in patients’ recovery. So now I will explain to you the principles. First, enough energy supply: here we mean high-calories diet. And if condition allows, corn starch or wheat starch can be supplied to those patients because in those kind of food, the low-quality protein contained is only 0.6%, and those can also meet high-calories requirements for uremia patients. Second, Sodium and water limitation, patients whose urine output is less than 1000ml per day, should reduce sodium intake to 3g/d, maximal intake should not be more than 5g per day. And water they take in should be about 700-900ml/d. Third, low-protein diet. Protein patients take in everyday should be 0.5g/kg/d among which high quality protein should account for 50% to 70%. And egg, milk and lean meat all are kind of good quality protein, yet bean products are not suggested. Fourth, patients after dialysis should supplement protein and energy. At the same time, cholesterol intake also should be restricted, because amino acid and less of protein is lost during dialysis, patients, in their daily life should supplement those kind of substances in order to maintain their life.
