Health Care for Children Nephrotic Syndrome after Treatment
There is a proverb in China that patient’s recovery from chronic disease 30% depends on treatment, while 70% depends on health care after treatment. So, obviously we can see how important the post-treatment health care is. Then how to take good care of the kids with nephrotic syndrome?
First regarding their daily life, parents should protect kids from cold during the Winter and keep warm; Prevent sun stroke during the Summer; Besides, do not let them go to crowded public places so as to avoid infection; Ask them to drink more water and also usually brush or clean their mouth to prevent dental ulcer; Supplement sufficient calcium and Vitamin D so that kids do not get bone problem or hypocalcemia.
Second, if there is infection, be caution with antibiotics, especially renal toxic antibiotic. So, do not take diuretics at large dose without specialist’s instructions in order to avoid shock, clot or thrombus.
Third, there is law regarding application of glucocorticoid in respect of dose and stages. Do not reduce the dose or stop this medicine at your own will; some children are very sensitive to steroids, and as far as they take the medicine for some time, those symptoms like severe swelling, heavy proteinuria, etc. are relieved, some parents or others duly decide to reduce or stop their medicine, which leads to recurrence of nephrotic syndrome.
Fourth, Check-up regularly so as to monitor their condition and adjust treatment accordingly, like 24 hour protein in urine, biochemistry test, urine routine test, kidney function test, etc.
Five, take them to pediatrics regularly so that doctors can observe their condition and see the changes. Go on with regular check-up for 5 years after relief.
