Diet Guidelines for Patients With Kidney Stone

Kidney stone can be divide into several different types, most of which are composed of calcium. Kidney stone is a kind of recurrent disease. In order to reduce the rate of recurrence, the diet of the patients plays a significant role of precaution. The guidelines of diet for patients with kidney stone are as follows:


1. Stop smoking and refrain from drinking, avoid spicy food, frying food and grilled food.
2. Limit the intake of calcium, take dairy products as prescribed.
3. About 60% of the kidney stone pertain to calcium oxalate stones, so patients should avoid the food rich in oxalate, include beans, beet, chocolate, grape, green pepper, spinach, strawberry and so on.
4. Kidney stone is directly related to protein intake. Uric acid, calcium and phosphorus will appear in the patient’s urine due to excessive protein intake. The intake of protein food for kidney stone patients should not exceed 180 g per day, which includes meat, chicken and fish.
5. The salt intake of patients with kidney stone is 2~3 g per day.
6. The intake of vitamin C should be limited to less than 3~4 g per day for the patients with calcium oxalate calculus.
7. Excessive amounts of vitamin D can lead to calcium accumulation in human body, the intake of vitamin D are suggested to less than the ration of RDA(400IU).
