PKD patients need to watch out for urinary tract infections

Researches show that urinary tract infections is the most severe complication of polycystic kidney disease, which include urocystitis, nephropyelitis, cyst infection and perinephric abscess. Urinary tract infection symptoms are usually the first manifestation in a variety of polycystic kidney complications.

Kidney experts consider that treat urinary tract infections is important to treat PKD. PKD patients with urocystitis will experience urgent urination, odynuria and suprapubic pain. If the infection affect upper urinary tract, the patients may get persistent high fever and backache.
So far, some studies have found that about 50%~70% of PKD patients will get urinary tract infections at least once in a lifetime, especially for female, when it does happen, the doctor can prolonged the use of antibiotics as far as possible, but to achieve entirely healing is very difficult, most of the infection will develop into perinephric abscess and blood poisoning, in this case the patients have to receive surgery or drainage therapy.
Clinically, there are one third of the PKD patients on hemodialysis have got urinary tract infections, although they have taken timely effective antibiotics and prolong the period of treatment, there are still some patients suffer from perinephric abscess, and sometimes death.

So PKD patients should cooperate with treatment actively and watch out for urinary tract infections.
