Are patients with chronic nephritis supposed to take salt

Patients with chronic nephritis are likely to experience edema and high blood pressure, it is attributed to reduced function of the kidney in filtering sodium salt.

As the sodium salt retained in blood, the water will build up too, which will lead to increase of blood volume and blood pressure. Nephritis can cause high blood pressure, in turn, the high blood pressure will aggravate the kidney workload, occurrence of high blood pressure is usually an important sign of kidney deterioration. The excess water in blood will pass through the blood vessel and cause edema in eyelids, legs, or even hydrothorax, ascites and pericardial effusion.
To have the conditions of edema and high blood pressure under control, patients need to restrict the intake of salt and water. when there is no edema and high blood pressure, and patients have certain amount of urine output, the restriction can be appropriately softened, still it should be no more than 6 grams per day. To patients who have urine output less than 1000 ml in 24 hours, they need to limit the water and salt intake strictly, with salt amount about 2 to 3 grams per day, or no salt intake when edema is severe. It is not just the table salt that to be restricted, food which contain high sodium also need to be limited, mainly include soy sauce, pickles, bacon, soda bread and cakes, sugar, vinegar and tomato sauce can be used as replacement of salt in flavoring.
